What a stunning shot of the moon! Not only does this perfectly capture the optical oddities of the “moon illusion” (why the moon looks bigger near the horizon), but when you think about the sheer technical mastery that went in to making it happen … WOW!

Philipp Schmidli (his website, in German) set up on a hillside a kilometer away so he could get this angle, after scouting the perfect spot on foot using GPS. To get the photo he needed to use a 1200 mm focal length, which is like a reverse-sniper-rifle of optical input. The moon illusion is enhanced by that telephoto trick, too, but you can head over to io9 if you want to dig into the technical details (several commenters there have done a good job with it).

But wow.

So this is an absolutley brilliant idea! Just attach the plug on to a window and it will harness solar energy. A small converter will convert it into electricity which can be freely used as a plug when you are in the car, on a plane or outside.

Love this design and I really think it has a great potential.

I wish this were real.

All the talk around Yankees fans singing Sweet Caroline at Yankees Stadium this week as a sign of support for Boston reminded me of this:

I took this photo on Sept 21, 2001 — the first game at Fenway after 9/11. (After 9/11, I went home to hang w/ Mom & Dad for a week). For anyone that doesn’t remember, it was really hard to get back to doing anything “normal” and even going to the game in an effort to get back to normal felt inappropriate. But we went. And it was more comforting than anyone thought to focus on something besides the news for a few hours.

Anyway, in the 4th inning, Fenway played Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” over the loud speaker.

We were sitting in the bleachers — the rowdiest section of Fenway — and as soon as the music started playing, I remember thinking “this is never going to work”… because it’s Boston… and Boston hates New York… and the Red Sox hate the Yankees. (remember, this is still 3 years before the Sox finally beat the Yankees in the ALCS)

But it was awesome, like “butterflies in your stomach” awesome.

And then at the end, after all of Fenway sang a song honoring New York, and there were those two seconds of silence/reflection, some guy in the bleachers yells “YANKEES STILL SUCK!” and we all laughed and then it felt like things were kind of normal again.

Anyway, figured I’d share. (cribbed a little from a “getting back to normal” post I wrote a few years ago)
